CFL Exchange Program underway Saving money on your electric bill doesn't necessarily require a lot of effort or cash. Some of the best ways to quickly enjoy lower energy costs are also the simplest, such as caulking around windows and installing weather stripping around doors. It's also as easy as merely changing your light bulbs.
Replacing incandescent light bulbs with the longer-lasting, more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs can save consumers about $30 or more in electricity costs over each bulb's lifetime. In July, Washington Electric Cooperative launched its CFL Exchange program by which Co-op members can exchange, at no cost, three of their incandescent light bulbs for three new CFLs. This removes the incandescent from service and immediately provides savings for the member. CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. The CFLs used in Washington Electric's exchange are soft white 19-watt, which are equivalent to 75-watt incandescent bulbs. Each bulb will save Co-op members more than 65 percent of the power consumed by their old bulbs.
It is important to note that this program is not a giveaway. It is an exchange program in which incandescent bulbs are replaced with the free CFLs. The CFLs used in the exchange are in packages of three, so the Cooperative will allow members to bring three incandescent bulbs to receive three new CFLs. The program is set up on a "one exchange per membership" basis. Members with multiple accounts are only eligible to participate in the exchange one time. These restrictions allow the Cooperative to ensure all members have an equal opportunity to participate in the program.
The CFL Exchange is available in the lobby of the Cooperative's office on Colegate Drive in Marietta. Again, this is a bulb-for-bulb exchange, and members must bring in three incandescent bulbs to receive one package containing CFLs. The Cooperative also plans to conduct exchanges in outlying portions of its service area. Information about these events will be made available in upcoming issues of Country Living magazine.

Annual Meeting another great success About 600 people braved the sweltering heat to participate in Washington Electric Cooperative 2008 Annual Meeting June 7 at the Washington Co. Fairgrounds. Elected to three-year terms on the Co-op's Board of Trustees were incumbents Eldon Miller of Marietta and Paul Fleeman of Lower Salem, and Larry Ullman of Graysville. Attendees also enjoyed live entertainment by the Steve & Bev Pottmeyer (The West Family), a KFC chicken lunch, door prizes and energy-related displays and demonstrations. Plan to attend next year's Annual Meeting, scheduled for June 6, 2009, at the Washington County Fairgrounds. |
